Brian Robinson and Cheryl Womack have beaten a strong field to win the 2019 Sydney Seniors Classic yesterday at ZONE BOWLING Rooty Hill.
Averaging 204 over 18 games Womack won her second senior ranked event title of 2019 after winning the SA Seniors Classic in April, with Robinson claiming his maiden ranked event title averaging 210.
When qualifying began on Saturday afternoon Womack averaged 200 across the opening 8 games to lead the field by 10 pins from Annette Bateup and 2018 champion Jeanette Baker in third.
On Sunday, Womack opened with 208 in game one and by game five the Queenslander created a sizable lead of 115 pins from Baker, and with a 267 game in the sixth, Womack had the title in her sights. Finishing with 173 and 199, Womack did enough to win the title and fight off a fast finishing Jeanette Baker (3197) by 81 pins, with Annette Bateup (3065) finishing in third.
In the senior men’s division, it came down to the wire after eventual winner Brian Robinson came from fourth place after day one of qualifying to win the title by 5 pins. Coming into the final 8 games Robinson sat 69 pins behind leader Andrew Thorpe. With some work to do the Canberra bowler bowled 244 and 264 in games three and four to edge ahead of Chris Bateup in second. With four games to go Bateup fought back with a 258 game to sit 89 pins behind Robinson and with a 203 and 237 game in the sixth and seventh game of the day. 45 pins was the difference with Robinson in the lead heading into the final game.
With it on the line Robinson bowled 173 with Bateup bowling 213 but it was just enough to see Robinson take the win by 5 pins from Bateup (3364) and 2018 winner Mike Muir (3329) in third.
In the grand senior men’s division, Jim Karakostas averaged 198 to finish first in the division with Terry Bissel in second and Pakhongsith Oudomvilay finishing in third.
Jeanette Baker finished first in her third ranked event of the year, taking the title in the grand senior women’s division. Baker held off next best Julie Harrison and Heather Robinson who finished in third.
