Bec Whiting and Shellie Van Dalen have won the 38th Vic150 Women’s division event, which took place over the Easter weekend at Zone Bowling Frankston in Victoria.
This is Whiting’s fifth Vic150 win, bringing her closer to the record of 7 titles held by Tenpin Bowling Australia Hall of Famer Ann-Maree Putney. Graded doubles partner Shellie Van Dalen won her second Vic150 graded title after winning in 2016 with then-doubles partner Kate Pilkington.
The event is the second-ranked women’s division event for 2023 and has placed Whiting firmly on top of the rankings after winning the Suncity Women’s Open earlier this year.
Whiting expressed her excitement over winning the Vic150, saying, “It feels really good to win this weekend, but what made it extra special was doing it at my home centre with my closest friends and family there to cheer me on. The Vic150 was my first-ever ranked event that I won back in 2008, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Whiting set the tone early, averaging an incredible 233.1 over the first eight games on day one. On day two, she extended her lead and finished on a total of 3,641 after 16 games, an amazing 435 pins ahead of the second spot. Her friend Bek Martin finished in second place, moving from seventh after day one to second after a strong day two, averaging 203 and finishing on 3,206, 12 pins ahead of fellow Victorian Jenny Notman.
The Vic150 is a unique tournament on the ranked event tour, with both scratch and graded divisions. Following 16 qualifying games, both divisions come together to compete in a doubles format to crown the champions.
Whiting praised the tournament, saying, “I really like that it gives the restricted bowlers a chance to team up with our elite bowlers. This type of opportunity is rare, and they can learn so much from us.”
Paired with the 12th-placed bowler in the graded division, Shellie Van Dalen, Whiting knew she was in a good place to continue her hot bowling from qualifying on her way to the title.
“I have known Shellie for quite a while and have travelled with her to a few tournaments, so I was pretty happy to learn I was paired with her,” said Whiting. “I really enjoyed our time on the lanes and tried to keep the environment calm and stress-free”.
The pairing of Whiting and Van Dalen secured seven wins of the 11 matchplay games, making it impossible for anyone to catch the leaders. The winning pair finished on a whopping 11,558 pins and couldn’t put a foot wrong in the matchplay finals section.
“The pins were on my side, and I just felt really comfortable all weekend” explained Whiting.
“I never panicked and felt like I was in my own little world.
“After a practice session on Thursday, I wasn’t feeling confident and then got Adam to drill me up a ball just to find some kind of look and it worked in my favour” added Whiting.
In second place, the top graded bowler of Tara Nankervis, and 12th scratch bowler Sarah Minehan finished 447 pins behind the leaders with a total score of 11,111 pins. Nankervis was the top qualifier on both days in the graded division, and Minehan jumped from 24th position after day one to make the top 12 cut after day two. Rounding out the podium in third position were Bek Martin and Renee Gaitanis, who finished on 11,020 pins.
The win for Bec Whiting is now her second consecutive ranked event win in the women’s division for 2023 after winning the Suncity Women’s Open earlier in the year.
“I’m starting to see glimpses of my old self coming back, which is making me more and more confident on the lanes, and I am not second-guessing myself as much and feel I have a real grasp on my emotions,” explained Whiting.
“The last couple of years, I have put unnecessary pressure on myself, so I am trying to do that less this year.
“My goal for the rest of the year is just to continue having fun on the lanes and enjoy the sport,” added Whiting.
The next women’s division ranked event is the Queensland Ladies Classic, which will be hosted at Caboolture Bowl in Queensland from May 6-7, and entries are still open with limited spots available.
