South Australian Jamie Phelan made her long-awaited debut in US College Bowling last weekend.
The Aussie left-hander bowls for Monmouth University situated in New Jersey, USA. The Monmouth University athletic teams are nicknamed the Hawks and have just begun their 2021 bowling season after competing in the Northeast Classic.
After sitting out for the entire 2020 season due to COVID restrictions, the young 20-year-old was ecstatic to make her collegiate debut finally.
“It’s been a long time coming to compete in the college circuit, but all the waiting was worth it!” explained Phelan. “The extra training I was doing has advanced my game entirely, and I’m really happy I can finally put it to work”.
After the debut event, Jamie’s performance saw her finish in 12th place, including three 200+ games including a team-high 236. The performance saw Phelan named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Rookie of the Week. A recognition that blew away the young South Australian.
“I was in practice with a few of my teammates and coach at the time. When we all found out they were really happy for me and I was super proud of myself, especially after my first competition. It felt amazing to be recognised in this way and made all the waiting and practice worth its while”.
Monmouth returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Garden State Classic at Bowlero in North Brunswick, NJ. The Hawks event calendar’s second event and Jamie’s goals remain grounded for the rest of the season.
“It’s been so long since I’ve bowled in a team dynamic with COVID taking so much time away from competing, I just want to enjoy my time on the lanes and hopefully win some tournaments with my team”.
From everyone at Tenpin Bowling Australia, we congratulate Jamie on her fantastic debut! We wish her the best for her upcoming schedule and will strive to keep you all updated with how she goes.
