A total of 285 bowlers took part in the 33rd National Disability Championship at Oz Tenpin Epping in Victoria in June with plenty of achievements to be proud of.
The National Disability Championship is one of Australia’s largest single sporting events for people with an intellectual or physical disability. The 10-day festival of bowling saw a whopping 1641 entries in the Championships along with two state team challenge champions and three masters crowned. A total of 2301 total series and 6,903 games were bowled.
A successful event can’t happen without several stakeholders working as one to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible. Tenpin Bowling Australia would like to thank several people for their support this year.
We want to thank the Victorian Government for supporting this year’s event and Oz Tenpin Epping for hosting the Championships.
A big shout out to our long-term partners, the Australian Disabilities Tenpin, for organising and running the event with us this year. Thank you to the Joint Management Committee members in Louise Cooke, Jenny Tiernan, Beth Boyd, Kaye Talbot and Rohan O’Neill for their collaboration in preparation for this year’s event.
We would also like to thank MySportLive.tv for streaming the State Team challenge day and Mike Griffith for providing commentary on the day. Thank you to the ever-present Barry Davies for providing photo services throughout the event.
Tenpin Bowling Australia would like to acknowledge the parents and carers who attended with the athletes throughout the event. Finally, we would like to thank the bowlers! Thank you to everyone who came and made this year’s event a success by having a bowl and we cant wait to see you at next year’s event!

The 33rd National Disability Championship

The Championships has bowlers compete in Singles, Doubles and Trios (3 bowlers per team) events. Entrants competing in the events bowled a three-game series with the highest series in each Grade and Event deemed champions. An All Events entry is when participants compete and provide scores in all three events – Trios, Doubles and Singles.

State Team Challenge Day
The prestigious State v State challenge is held on the second Wednesday of the Championships to determine the best State/Territory representative team of tenpin bowlers and to foster, develop and advance a spirit of good sportsmanship, fellowship and a good relationship amongst the representative teams and to advance their mutual interest in relation to bowling generally.
Both the Cole Cup (Restricted ) and the Michael Cooke Memorial Shield (open) teams consist of eight (8) players. The actual playing strength of any team will be five(5) players.
Cole Cup Challenge
There were seven games in this year’s Cole Cup with seven teams and a bye in the eight-team draw. The seven games included one game against the other teams (six) and one against the bye (having to bowl better than their average for points).
A maximum of 7 points per game was up for grabs per game. The five player team bowlers within the teams would receive a point for a win against their direct opponent and 2 bonus points if the team’s pinfall was greater than their opponents.
After narrowly missing out on the title in 2021, New South Wales would return with vengeance in 2022 and claim the crown as 2022 Cole Cup champions. The sky blues would end the event with 37 points ahead of Victoria in second on 33 points and the Australian Capital Territory taking the bronze with 32.5 points.

Michael Cooke Memorial Shield
For the third year in a row, New South Wales is the Open State champions and winners of the inaugural Michael Cooke Memorial Shield!
