Tenpin bowling has, for a long time, done well to make all abilities feel included. Bowl Patrol is no exception, we’re keen to see every body bowling. We already know there’s plenty of ways to modify the sport to make it one of the most accessible;
- Bumpers – to keep the ball on the lanes
- Ramps – to place and roll the ball down
- Handles – to assist in holding the ball
Are just three pieces of equipment that enhance the game, in addition to handicap scoring, accessible building, leagues, the support of Special O and disability sport organisations across the country. Every day thousands of bowlers utilise centres that are open and accessible to them all day, every day.
The nationally recognised learn to bowl program Bowl Patrol acknowledges all abilities and wants every participant to enjoy their experience. In partnership with organisations such as Special Olympics, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) and many others, we tested the program with learner-bowlers of all abilities.
What’s resulted, after months of testing, refining and developing are these fantastic resources designed to make the learning process smooth and easy!

The ‘Word Board’
Bowlers speak another language! Part of learning to bowl is getting your head around the new words and phrases you’ll hear on the lanes.
This double sided card can be used before and during sessions to help with communication. Whether non-verbal or simply interested in practising spelling… the images and words will help learn to bowlers better understand the sport.

The ‘Visual Schedule’
Any new program can take some getting used to. Knowing the order, what comes next, and understanding the session format can help alleviate nerves or anxieties.
These A5 cards can be displayed or used in demonstrations for Patrollers to know what activity they’re up to, what’s coming up next, and when the session will end. They can also help identify prime opportunities for break times!

The ‘Social Story’
This is a series of images with accompanying explanations aim to take the participant through the experience before it even begins!
Utilised prior to attending the first Bowl Patrol session, parents/teachers/carers/Lane Rangers (coaches) can use this story-book to talk through what’ll happen when you go to the centre.
From what to see, to how to participate in the session, what to do if you need a break, some of the rules and what to expect.
