Two Games Down in Block C:

7.58PM
Earlier today we caught up with Group Leader Stefanie Johnson from the USA – who said that smart play helped her today.
“I think that we played the lanes a little smarter and tried to keep the ball in play a little more and not give away the product and that ended up helping me score-wise”. It actually helped her to a 5/0 Win/Loss and she moves into the next block with 24 points and 2122 pins.
“I am going to start the next round, how I ended this round ” she said “so far my infinite physics is my go-to ball, for now that seems to be the winner at the moment.”
Team USA visited the Australia Zoo earlier in the week – and that has been a highlight for many of team – and with the sensational weather the Sunshine Coast is delivering right now, Stefanie has already made classic Australian plans “when I have some free time, I will probably go to the beach”.

Sunshine Coast local Brandon Qualischefski is the owner of the Pro Shop here at the Tenpin World Cup and he is seeing the patterns no one else does.
At the start of the competition “Brando” was using 1000/2000 on the Storm Surface Factory machine and from today, he seeing more people shining the balls up.
Ball tech is changing all the time, right now Brando is seeing “more and more balls with the 4K fast finish, and now Storm has the reactor gloss shine on them as well”. Jason Belmonte’s new Fate is a fan favorite, and the Phase 5 is also popular.
At the Bowl Expo this year in Las Vegas, Brando said they “have all the stuff that makes jobs a little easier and quicker in the pro-shop, and there are always new ball products”
A World Cup at his home on the Sunshine Coast is an excellent opportunity for Brando to catchup with mates that he has not seen for a long time. “The comradery between the players is strong, it is great to see the popular teams like the USA who are always the red hot ticket that people want to see”.
Recently, as a player Brandon was part of the TBA’s new bowling product the Tenpin Premier League. Playing at the ‘Suncity Showdown’ here at the AGL National High Performance Centre, the broadcast event was “a lot of fun and it was a great experience that I can see growing into something bigger and better”.
In its first year Brando said, “the team at TBA have done an excellent job and I really like the fact that this was something that we have not seen before and that it bought new funding to the sport”. For next year he hopes to “see the brand of TPL grow – it would be interesting to see what would happen if we could have it like the South Pacific days where you bowled in qualifiers and you would open it up a little to have other bowlers from around our region to attend”.
9.24PM
Mak is currently undefeated in this Block – holding at the top of leader board.

6.38PM
We are onto the Position Round – here is what finished at:

6:33PM
The format for the World Cup can evolve at the end of these sessions – Technical Director Mike Seymour explained “The last round of match play in each group is a position round, for example for the Men after 13 rounds, 1v2, 3v4 etc. at the conclusion of the position round if there is a tie for position 8 in the Men’s groups and position 4 in Women’s groups there will be a one game roll off to determine who moves thru to the singles bracket matches.”
6.25PM
The media scrum caught up with American Bryanna Cote off her second group win – and she is sticking to the game plan. “I don’t think that I did anything different today, I hit the pocket and make the spares, the game plan was the same as day one”.
Cote cannot see any changes for her next block but will carefully watch her teammates to pick up anything she can reflect in her game. “I have used the 900 Global Reality and the Reality Check” she said of her equipment choices “I start with the Reality and move to the Check – which has worked so far”
Bec Whiting in that same block said the lanes “played a lot more open, I was able to have a bit more room right than what I did the other day, so that was of benefit to me.” The Australian said that in the last block, she “tried to start left on the fresh, but I noticed that the shot was not there, so I moved right and that was a lot more successful, and I could execute better.”
For gear, Bec said the “midrange is what is looking best, start with something strong and fresh and it kind of dies out about Game Two and then moving onto something with a bit of surface has helped me.
6.07PM
Team Germany make a move in Group B, moving in to the third position – Australia Back in lead from the USA.

Good evening from the World Cup or Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening from across the globe where sports fans are watching the Tenpin World Cup 2022 – we shall be back tomorrow for Day 3.
10.34PM
The final Group for today included Australian Bek Martin. It was a disappointed Martin who spoke to us after her Round, finding the lane “quite tough” saying that she “played the lanes a little wrong, going of what was at pratice, it played different my adjustments need to be quicker.”
As Martin plans for the next block she intends “a change of surfaces for my balls and to play the lanes differently” to what she did today.
10.28PM
We are winding down for the evening here as preparations are underway for Day Three – which will see the Groups play Block Two of this Round 1.
9.34PM
Scores are confirmed and Group D finished like this:

9.27PM

8.12PM
The opening game sees Collen Pee with a 277 to start her World Cup!
7.46PM
While we are warming up Group D, Australian Grace Fahy dropped by for a chat after moving steadily up the ladder in her Group C Round 1 outing.
She said that “the lanes were really tough and sparing was key”. Fahy found it ‘a bit scary’ to be bowling against such quality international talent, may of who bowl professional and with the PWBA but she said, “that she survived and would try for the next block not to get in her head so much and just make good shots”.
7.41PM
4 minutes until we are ready for the practice in the final – here are the women who will round out this evening’s play:

7.25PM
We are back on schedule with a 7.45pm start for the next and final block.
7.23PM
And then comes the change – Malaysia in the lead in the final game.
7.20PM
Janin Ribguth from Team Germany has not dropped a game yet and sits on top of the Group C ladder with Siti Safiyah sitting right behind her waiting for the result of her same game.
7.10PM
Jason Belmonte has returned to the AGL National High Performance Centre after his block this morning to support his fellow Australians and he is excited to be in the Sunshine Coast.
“The Sunshine Coast is living up to its name” he said today while watching teammate Grace Fahy battle it out in Group C of the Women’s Singles Competition.
Chatting about his block this morning Jason noted the “lane pattern is one of those one where you feel really comfortable for a very short period of time. It is making you move and every time you move you can feel comfortable again, but it just does not last very long.”
In terms of the competition – Jason knows talent when he is surrounded by it “the teams that are here have sent their strongest players, not just at amateur level, but also the professional level, so the field strength is really top notch and in a lot of my matches nothing was easy, no match was over early and that is what you can come to expect at a World Cup.”
For his next block, after a rest day, Jason believes that it will “be about making those quick changes and making a few surface prep adjustments to allow me to play an ‘in case’ part of the lane if I feel really lost”. Making moves has been a theme from all the bowlers today and Jason knows that making those “moves faster, even faster than I originally thought will hopefully lead him to more W’s.”
6.49PM
Australian Grace Fahy takes American Danielle McEwan in their game 217 to 205 – as the scores for the fourth game start to roll in.
6.39PM
We have slowed the pace down here to be in the middle of the third game – there are some great scores and shaky starts into high scores across the board.

Some people like, Pontus Andersson are very easy to please – when asked how he is liking Australia after his win in the final Men’s Group – he said that he is just happy it is over 10 degrees. Winter in Sweden must be brutal, but we have nothing but blue skies here on the Sunshine Coast.
Speaking to us about the lanes and his first outing for the World Cup today, Andersson said “the lanes are a bit tricky, you have to bowl really well to get good score, but if you bowl well and do the right adjustments and stuff you can get a good score”.
With a new format, everyone is adjusting, and Andersson noted that it was fun to “come to Australia and try a new format straight away – it is something that I don’t think everyone is used to, and it very fun.
5.38PM

As the next block enters Game 4, we caught up with leader from Group C, American A.J. Johnson.
It was clear from the start that Group C was strong “myself, Frankie, Jasper and Belmo” said Johnson “makes a pretty strong group and it was part of the game plan to get off to a good start”.
And that Johnson did overall, but it was not without its moments. “A couple of pairs threw me for a loop and I bowled a 170/180 for two games with the pace of how everything is going, it was tough to slow everything down to see what I really needed to do”.
Making corrections AJ said that he “just had to pay attention to which players I was following and the pairs themselves, every pair plays a little different and it is nice to have a few lefties to have the right side hold up a little longer.”
Starting today meant that four members of team got to watch their teammates and other competitors all day yesterday, and for the next block that observation was again part of the strategy. “I am going to watch the next couple of squads and see if I need to make a couple of surface adjustments with some other balls and just see what they give me when we start and make adjustments off that. As they keep running the lanes, they keep getting flatter and flatter, so maybe some surface adjustments and a couple of different balls in the middle of the block. The game plan we had going in seems to work really well, just got to keep executing.
Team USA has been enjoying its time on Australian shores, with AJ using the local slang to confirm “Mate, I love it here, this place is amazing, it is my first time in Australia, and I think that I could not have gone to a better part of it, it is beautiful.”
3.43PM
A Silver Jubilee on the Lanes
He started in 1998 – so John Janawicz is about to mark 25 years in our Game.

But before this was his profession, he was always a bowler. From the age of 2, John has been bowling and continues to be a competitive bowler as he travels across the globe in the sport he loves.
Arriving in Australia to commence work for the Para Bowling World Cup, Janawicz in his role for Kegel Technical Support, has been part of numerous World Cups across the globe through Kegel’s work with the USA national and international federations.
World Championships, John says are “always very prestigious and you get so many of the best players, very good players from around the world, that any of these events are special”.
His professional start in the industry came via a six-month stint where he took care of the lane maintenance for the USBC national tournament, before Kegel’s late CEO John Davis hired him in the in summer of 1998 and he has been with Kegel ever since.
Using the Kegel Flex, brought to Australia specifically for this World Cup, John noted that the machine “has the ability to run two different lane conditioners if you so choose, and it also has a few other upgrades where you can change the speed of the buffer motor to run it a bit higher or a bit lower to change the taper from the front to the back of the oil pattern.”

“You also have cleaner mixing upgrade as well where you can actually change the cleaner mixture ratio all via the touch screen and you have the ability to change the microliter stream of the oil pumps.”
“All these upgrades” says John “allow us to fine tune the pattern from side to side and front to back to match it to a particular lane surface to create the best, most fair, environment that we possibly can.”
John noted that “at World Cups you tend to want to see the pattern a little more competitive, the best bowlers like a challenge, you want to make a pattern competitive but not so hard that people don’t know where their balls are going”.
The next event will see John travel to the Asian Bowling Championship in Hong Kong for the January 2023 event, after having enjoyed his first visit to Australian shores. “Australia has been fantastic, I am really enjoying my time here” he told our media pack “it kind of reminds of me of Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach in Florida where I grew up, the people are super friendly, it is very scenic, and the food has been good!”.

Cooley caught up with us after his strong performance to take the number 1 spot in Group B.
When asked about this evening’s play he said it was “way tougher than what we practiced on, a lot of guys threw urethane, so it became a lot tighter than we were used to and then it was about shot making, which I not disappointed about, I think that it is way better this way, than having to try to average 230 to win”.
Overall he said he was “happy with how I bowled”, and for the next block he plans to “add a ball to the bag”. Having submitted 5 balls originally, this has left Sam with a spot to select his final ball.
9.40pm

Martin Larsen was the top of the Group A standings after the first block, and we caught up with him as he finished his successful first outing.
Echoing the statements of his fellow competitors, Lawson noted that the “brand new format, it is very much different for us, and we usually play round robin format, so it is a little different mindset”. He rightly pointed out that with his 6 wins and a single loss “I have to like this format”.
On the play today Martin was pleased to have moved on from official practice where he said “I did not really find the right shape and I was a little worried before today, but I got off to a good start and I used my trusted balls. My Phase 2 was really nice to start with and I only made one ball change, so really no big surprises.”

We took the opportunity to catch up with Group A Block 1 Leader Sabrina Laub from Germany to ask about opening the competition. Sabrina said “at the beginning it was tough because you had a lot of ball motion and you have to make very quick decisions and adjustments and you have to make a lot of ball changes”.
When asked about her overall thoughts on the format of the competition Laub was quick to note that “The competition is great, because of the system you have to make quick decisions – which makes the competition exciting”.

Her plan for the next block she said “was to be doing the exact same thing”.
Team Germany has been enjoying the Sunshine Coast and Sabrina said that “the Sunshine Coast is great here; we are often at the beach going for a walk and it is a place where you can do a lot of team building.”
