Queenslander Chloe Jones and Northern Territory representative Dan York have taken out the 2021 TBA Classic Cup at the ANC in Hobart this afternoon.
This year’s event saw the format change where bowlers would compete in a match play section before revealing the top three bowlers who would progress to a stepladder final. In what was the 46th running of the event, both champions would run the ladder and topple the number one seeds in the title matches.
The top seeds for the stepladder finals were South Australians Wesley Craill and Brooklyn Brooks. After entering the finals as the top qualifier, Craill would average 216.1 in match play to cement the top seed for the men. Fellow South Australian and Youth NTS member Brooklyn Brooks would equally impress averaging 214.7 in match play for her number one tag in the female division.
In a close 2v3 matchup, Chloe Jones would defeat Devonport Tenpin’s Sara Peck 204-192 to book her spot in the title match. Facing Brooks in the title match, Jones would save her best game for last. Bowling her best game of the event, Jones would defeat Brooks 246-204 to claim the title. After recently aging out of the youth division, the Classic Cup title adds to an evergrowing impressive resume for the North Queenslander.
The 2v3 men’s division saw two Territorians battle it out with Dan York winning his clash with Darren Burton 224-183. Facing a red hot Wesley Craill in the title match, the bowler from Dustbowl, Alice Springs would prevail 267-238 in a high scoring affair. York becomes the second Territorian male to win the event joining three-time Classic Cup champion Chris Kirwin (2007, 2008 and 2018) as champions of the event.
