National Youth Cup Winners Decided

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

The winners of the first national ranked event of 2018 were decided on Sunday at the National Youth Cup at Campbelltown City Bowl.

Following two days of competition Owen Wong Wen Fei from Singapore took the 2018 boys title by the small margin of 11 pins, while Jodie Kos was crowned the best in the girl’s division.

With plenty of competition on the boy’s division and having finished stage 1 in 10th place, Wen Fei trailed leader Nathan Shoesmith by 172 pins after stage 1 of qualifying.

After gaining 10 points in the first match, the Singaporean found his line in matches two and three to take maximum points.  With the title in touching distance, Wen Fei claimed 10 points in both the fourth and fifth matches.  In match six Wen Fei fought back to take 20 bonus pins and have the title go down to the final match.  With it all on the line, the young Singaporean charged into the lead with a 231 game that sealed his victory at the National Youth Cup.

In the girl’s division, Canberran Jodie Kos led from start to finish in an impressive display over the two days of competition.  Having averaged 200 on the first day of qualifying, Kos bowled games of 218, 214, 246, 257, 214 and 225 on day two, to keep the top placing and move into the match play rounds.

After not gaining points in match 1 and only taking 5 points in each of the next 2 matches the leader started to slip.  But after picking up maximum bonus points in match 4, Kos went onto take a further 20 points in the final two matches to win the title by 67 pins from Tegan Ihnativ.

With a field of 98 participants, two perfect games were bowled by Matt Clague and 2016 champion Blayne Fletcher during day two of qualifying.  Emily McKellar had a high game of 279 for the girl’s division.

The tournament now turns its’ attention to the National Youth Challenge, where teams will battle it out over the next 3 days to decide the winners.
