Annetts & Griffiths Win Junior Sydney Cup

Tuesday, October 03, 2017

With the field including bowlers from Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and from across Australia, Taneisha Griffiths has won a second consecutive Junior Sydney Cup, with Kyle Annetts claiming his 3rd ranked event title win of 2017.

With the tournament beginning at Campbelltown City Bowl on Saturday morning, Griffiths came out of the blocks fast on day 1.  For Griffiths it was an impressive start, only bowling under the card once in the first 8 games to average 227 and sit in first place.

On day 2, Griffiths kept her form to increase her lead the field in the girls division by 136 pins from Emma Stephens.  For Annetts who won the Australian Junior Masters and Queensland Junior Cup this year, it was a slower start finishing in 8th position on day 1 to move into 6th after the second block of 8 games on day 2.

On day 3 both bowlers continued in the match play rounds, which saw Annetts climb to first place by winning 11 of 15 matches and Griffiths able to hold onto the top position, winning the same number of matches to finish the day in first place and book a place in the stepladder final.
With a nervous wait to see who they would draw in the title match, Malaysian Nur Hazirah Bt. Ramli drew Grace Fahy in the first eliminator in the girl’s division.  With the Malaysian starting strong, the match came down to the wire with Nur Hazirah Bt. Ramli taking victory 185 - 181.

In the boy’s division, Brandon Edwards and Kallan Strong battled it out in the eliminator with the match coming down to the final frames where Edwards took victory by a mere 10 pins 175 - 165.

In the title match, Griffiths took charge and the confidence gained in qualifying saw Griffiths take the match from Nur Hazirah Bt. Ramli 225 - 183.

In the boy’s final Annetts was pushed all the way by Edwards with the game going down to the wire and eventually seeing Annetts take the win 254 - 247.

The 3-day event also saw Kallan Strong bowl the only perfect game of the tournament on day 2 of qualifying.
