Monday 27th March
2006 - The well respected and patronized Werribee
Youth Cup was held at Werribee Superbowl on the
25th & 26th March 2006. This event coincided
with the final weekend of the Melbourne Commonwealth
Games which hindered bowlers traveling in from
interstate with very few from outside of Victoria
making the journey to Melbourne. However, 55 youth
males and 32 youth females managed the trip to
the newly renovated centre in Melbourne’s
western suburbs. Defending champions Glen Loader
(Vic) and Clair Johnston (SA) were seeded as favorites.
Unfortunately Clair had suffered at mishap a few
weeks prior and entered carrying a restrictive
foot injury which limited her success.
Three squads of qualifying on
the Saturday saw Dillan De Mather (Latrobe Valley)
lead the men with an outstanding 221 average on
a very testing lane condition. Local teenager
and Australian Youth Team member Cassie Staudinger
lead the women’s division with a 204 average
and was the only female bowler over the card after
qualifying. Day two saw the field cut to the top
16 men and top 16 women leading into 16 rounds
of matchplay final.
Men’s Matchplay - Third
qualifying local bowler David Porto got out of
the blocks well in the marathon matchplay section
of the tournament with a 234 start and then 8
wins in a row to challenge for the lead. However,
he was no match for the very consistent Glen Loader
who started with a pair of 186 games and then
a string of 200+ games and 14 winning bonuses
to finish as the 2006 winner and an overall tournament
average of 220.
Women’s Matchplay –
Queenslander Cassie Fagg started well in the first
matchplay round with a tournament high 270 game
and jumped from 13th to 7th within one game. However,
at the head of the field the battle was raging
between Commonwealth Youth Games team member Louise
Ingoe (SA), Kerry-Ann Klop (SA), Melanie Warmington
(Qld) and local girl Cassie Staudinger. The lead
swapped a number of times but the 13 matchplay
wins and 390 bonus pins got Louise Ingoe over
the line for her first 2006 tournament win.
The 2006 Werribee Youth Cup forms
the second round of the Qubica-AMF National Youth
Grand Prix circuit and the third round the 2006
Tenpin Bowling Australia National Youth Rankings.
Next round of both series is the
Mayfield Youth Cup.
