Matchplay – Since pinfall
was dropped after qualifying,
the top 16 bowlers started the day all square. However
the pace for the day was set by Townsville’s
Steve Hunt who rolled out eight consecutive wins in
matchplay recording a 228 matchplay average and a
200 pin lead with seven games to go. Gavin Cavanagh,
+197, George Frilingos, +154 and Brandon Qualischefski,
+106 tried to stay in touch. Hunt showed signs of
tiring in games nine and ten leaving the door ever
so slightly ajar for Frilingos and Cavanagh to close
in. By the end of matchplay Frilingos and Cavanagh
had managed to out bowl Hunt. However, by virtue of
more head to head wins and 240 bonus pins Hunt took
the 2006 Mackay Open by a mere 9 pins over Frilingos
and a further 13 pins to Cavanagh.
