Wednesday, 1st December, 2004 - The 2nd Commonwealth Youth Games opened with a bang last night celebrating the vast history of our continent and the multiculturalism it enjoys. The parade of nations kicked off the evening with the Australian flag bearer middle distance runner Madeline Heiner proudly leading the team around the track.

The huge ground was welcomed by Governor John Landy to the games stating "the pursuit of gold is once again undertaken by the youth of the world"

The Athletes Oath was read, on behalf of all competitors, by Australian Tenpin Bowler Bianca Flanagan.

The ceremony celebrated the Regions of Victoria, the flora and fauna of the area, the culture and history of the Aboriginal people and the history of European settlement in Australia.
